Blind Nicolas, Dr.
Please give us a personal quote or a quote of a famous person (e.g. of Albert Einstein) that describes you and your life/work.
“Don’t panic.”
Please describe your job in only one sentence and tell us what the most important goal of this work is.
I am an engineer working for NIRPS, the red arm of HARPS, whose aim is to search and characterise habitable Earth-like planets.
How did you get into this research/work field?
I did not follow a straight path to astronomy, although it has been a long lasting passion. I found here a field offering a great deal of diversity, challenges, and problems to solve.
What would be the greatest discovery you would like to see in your life time?
Not very original, but the discovery of another life form on another planet is clearly on the top of the list. But what would be the consequence of such a discovery on our own world?!
You work for the NCCR PlanetS. What do you think will the NCCR enable you to do you couldn’t do without it?
It provides ressources necessary for the successful development of fast track projects like NIRPS, which is itself preparing to the next generation of instruments for the Extremely Large Telescopes.
