Fabrication of NIRPS

The Workshop

Mechanical workshop of the astronomy department of the University of Geneva: It is in this workshop that some of the components of NIRPS (Near InfraRed Planet Searcher) are manufactured, assembled and integrated into the instrument. The Geneva Observatory is responsible for the construction and installation of the NIRPS front end, which is a subsystem of the instrument. It is directly attached to the cassegrain focus of the ESO’s 3.6m telescope in La Silla, Chile. Its main role is to collect light from the star, separate the visible part from the infrared part and then inject it into optical fibres to distribute it towards the HARPS spectrograph (through the HCFA) for the visible and towards the NIRPS spectrograph for the infrared.
