Spacetek commercialization (development of disruptive mass spectrometer for terrestrial application)

Spacetek Technology AG is a spin-off company of the University of Bern, Switzerland that aims at producing compact mass spectrometers (product name: RG-TOF and FieldTOFx) designed for field applications, building on the knowhow from space exploration.
The core team who was responsible for instrument development at the University of Bern will join Spacetek Technology.
The commercialized mass spectrometer shall address a broad range of customers with reduced budgets yet with the need of a powerful instrument.
Typical customers are developing countries, which needs to deal with drinking water quality because of natural contamination, or industrial countries which have more and more needs to monitor the quality of any kind of health relevant products like water and air.
The commercialization of the ion optical system based on the P-BACE instrument (see pictures to the right) fits perfect into the NCCR Technology Platform. The academic research partner is the Space Research & Planetary Sciences Department from the Physikalisches Institut, University of Bern.

Applications

Air and water investigation or quality supervision will be the most promising applications in the field. Developing countries needs to deal with drinking water quality because of natural contamination. Industrial countries have more and more needs to monitor the quality of any kind of health relevant products like water and air.
