Terrestrial exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1

09/03/2017 @ 18:30 - 20:30
University Bern, Aula, Room 210, Hochschulstrasse 4
Bern, BE 3012 Switzerland

TRAPPIST-1 is a dwarf star only 40 lightyears away from Earth. Recently scientists announced the discovery of seven Earth-size planets around the star. On Thursday, 9 March 2017, scientists from the University of Bern will speak about the findings. And as a special guest SF writer Laurence Suhner will read her latest novel. The event is open to the public. On 22 February 2017, NASA announced the discovery of seven temperate Earth-size planets around the nearby ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1.…

Extrasolar Planets: A Laboratory to Confront the Theory of a Planet Formation with Observations

15/03/2017 @ 18:15 - 20:00
International Space Science Instiutute (ISSI), Hallerstrasse 6, Room 205
Bern, 3012 Switzerland

Before the discovery of the first extrasolar planet about 20 years ago it was thought that the global structure of the Solar System is not a coincidence, but rather a necessary consequence of the physics of the planetary formation process. Theoreticians therefore also predicted that planetary systems around other stars should be similar to our system at large. Observations have proven otherwise: with the counter of known extrasolar planets now at 3000, there is one word that describes them best:…

Planets and exoplanets

How are planets formed and how do they change? What can planetary atmospheres say about the habitability of celestial bodies? What do we learn from research about exoplanets? And: Is there a large planet at the borders of our solar system that has not yet been discovered? Christoph Mordasini from the Institute of Physics at the University of Bern is investigating such exciting questions as part of his research. But what makes this field of research so fascinating? What does…

On the Shore of the Cosmic Ocean

21/08/2018 @ 11:00 - 12:00

“The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore, we’ve learned most of what we know. Recently, we’ve waded a little way out, maybe ankle-deep, and the water seems inviting.”  Carl Sagan visualized our perspective on Earth as looking out to a vast ocean, and with an international fleet of space-based and ground observatories now and soon to come, we are poised more than ever to jump into the larger universe.  The newly launched Parker Solar Probe, in conjunction with the…
