Cegla Heather, Dr.

Please give us a personal quote or a quote of a famous person (e.g. of Albert Einstein) that describes you and your life/work.
“Science is magic that works.” (Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle)

Please describe your job in only one sentence and tell us what the most important goal of this work is.
My job is to disentangle stellar signals from planetary signals in order to enable the future detection and confirmation of Earth-like alien worlds.

How did you get into this research/work field?
I did several internships during my undergraduate time, and found that I most enjoyed studying exoplanets and binary star systems. This led me to choose a PhD project involving exoplanets; I really enjoyed my PhD and the rest followed from there.

What would be the greatest discovery you would like to see in your life time?
Since my research aims to help detect and confirm planets, I have to say the most exciting discovery would be to confirm life on a planet outside our solar system.

You work for the NCCR PlanetS. What do you think will the NCCR enable you to do you couldn’t do without it?
NCCR PlanetS provides a great platform for communicating research throughout Switzerland, and as such it will help create many fruitful collaborations.
